What does Orthodontics (Orthodontology) mean?
The branch of dentistry that detects and treats crooked teeth and irregular jaw relationships is called orthodontics. People who specialize in this field are called orthodontists.
Orthodontic treatment is a way of aligning or positioning teeth to improve the appearance of teeth and their function. It also helps to maintain the long-term health of teeth, gums and temporomandibular joints by spreading the bite pressure to all teeth.
Why do orthodontic problems occur?
How are they treated?
Jaw-related disorders are often inherited. In such cases, a treatment program is prepared taking into account the age of the patient. If the lower or upper jaw is too far back in adolescents, the treatment is handled by orthodontic methods.
Aesthetic problems can also be avoided by using porcelain brackets.
Sometimes, orthodontic treatment can be applied to prepare for the prosthesis in order to make a better prosthesis. In this way, the teeth become more suitable for the prosthesis. Such treatments are usually completed within 4 to 12 months.
Can orthodontic treatment be done at any age?
There is no age limit in orthodontic treatment. However, the duration and planning of the treatment may vary according to the age of the patient.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
During the application and in the intermediate sessions, patients do not feel any pain. However, wounds may occur on the cheeks, especially within a few days after the braces are put on. The healing process of these wounds is 1 week and the probability of recurrence is very low.
In rare cases such as bracket breakage, wounds may recur. These types of problems can be fixed with the little touches of the dentist.
