Orthognatic Surgery
What is orthognathic surgery
(jaw surgery)?
It is a surgical method that helps to correct the shape, structure and relationship disorders of the lower and upper jaws.
Why do orthognathic problems occur? How is it treated?
It occurs due to skeletal disorders such as underbites, overbites, crossbites, open bites, or facial asymmetry. If these problems are diagnosed before the end of the stage of growth, they can be corrected through orthodontic treatment. Correction of these problems in adulthood is possible thanks to orthognathic surgery. The principle in orthognathic surgical treatment begins with orthodontic treatment (by putting on braces) and proper fitting of the teeth to the jaw. With the subsequent surgery, the jaws are repositioned and aligned with the skull and to each other. After 12-18 months of braces treatment, surgery is performed
How orthognathic surgery is done? How long does the treatment take?
The surgery is done intraorally. Absolutely no interference will be made to the face. Therefore, no surgery scar will occur after the treatment. Only a swelling will occur due to facial edema. But this swelling will go away quickly.
The patient is discharged within 1-3 days after the operation. It may take approximately 3-4 weeks for the patient to regain their daily functions. After the operation, orthodontic treatment continues and after 6 months, the braces are removed and the treatment is completed.
What awaits the patient after an orthognathic surgery?
The jaws will remain attached with rubber bands for up to 1 week for the bones to unite. The patient can easily change these bands themselves. During this period, liquid nutrition is carried out. 1 week after the surgery, the patient needs to visit doctor again for follow-up.
In this follow-up, the mouth is opened and opening-closing exercises are taught. After this stage, rubber band attachment continues, gradually decreasing. Orthodontic treatment continues (for about 4 months) and then the attached braces are removed. These types of problems can be treated with the little touches of the dentist.
